History

The Dementia Society Perak was formed in 2010 to create public awareness of the condition Dementia that is caused by different diseases and to provide assistance to people with dementia and their caregivers.

It started with our official Launch in Auditorium, Pantai Hospital Ipoh, on the 25th September 2010, organized by Dato Dr. Mah Hang Soon, Perak State EXCO member. Mrs. Bebe Lim Eng Cheang donated RM 10,000.00 so we could start our work.

Before opening our centre we organized several workshops to train our staff and to offer training to some caregivers of people with dementia. Madam Shanta Kumari and the Physiotherapist Chan Mei Kheng gave us much information on how to treat and support people with dementia.

On 13th March 2011, we had our first soft launch of the centre, and on 14th June we started our daycare service with opening twice a week.

Many workshops were conducted since then and specialists from other countries came to visit our centre as well.

We’ve also had several volunteers working at our centre; Since July 2012 AFS (American Field Service) Antarabudaya Malaysia is sending volunteers to our centre. They are a great help for our activities and development.

On 2nd December 2012 a Toyota Hiace Van was donated in the loving memory of Late Dr. & Mrs.(Bebe) Lim Eng Cheang. Since then we can offer the service of transportation to our clients.

On 30th July the Dementia Society Perak purchased a piece of land in Padang Tembak so that we can now plan to build our own Centre in Ipoh.

Our last event of year 2013 was the Memory Walk on 28th September. A lot of time was spent on the project and it turned out to be a great success where we had some 1600 participants taking part!
